Footfall Ensemble presented the dance/music performance In The Company of Others, a collaborative exploration of improvisation and its inherent risks, delights, and emergent potentialities. The ensemble brought together dancers Suze Smith, Naree Vachananda, and Philipa Rothfield, with director Alice Cummins and Myfanwy on viola and fretless bass guitar. The performance created a dynamic, spontaneous conversation between the dancers and musicians, where movement and sound unfolded in real time, reflecting the energy and impulses of the performers and the space.
The work drew on the legacy of the post-modern dance movement that emerged from Judson Church in New York City in the 1960s and 70s, a time when artists broke away from traditional structures to explore new ways of engaging with movement and performance. In In The Company of Others, improvisation became the vehicle through which performers responded to each other and the environment, creating a fluid and unpredictable exchange. Through this dialogue between movement, sound, and space, the piece highlighted the raw, unrefined moments that emerge when artists step into the unknown, challenging both themselves and the audience to embrace the unpredictable nature of live performance.
